After spending the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, Markieff Morris will be playing for the Miami Heat for the upcoming 2021-22 NBA season.
Markieff won an NBA championship with the Lakers in 2020 in NBA bubble in Orlando. He played a key role in Lakers’ championship run averaging six points, three rebounds and one assist in 18 minutes per game.
The former lottery pick did a good job during the Lakers’ championship run, serving as a backup for Lakers big men Anthony Davis and Dwight Howard. Markieff stretched the floor for the Lakers, sinking twelve three-point shots in the 2020 NBA Finals against his team now, the Miami Heat.
The 6’9 big man recently talked with South Florida Sun-Sentinel, He praised the Miami Heat’s “collective” style of play, while also adding that he wouldn’t have to “run to the corner every play” and wait for somebody to create for him.
I see myself as a guy that I can get back to my old self, just playing the game the right way, not having to look over my shoulder. I feel like we have nobody on the team like just, ‘give him the ball, and then everybody just watch and let them make the play.’ It’s a collective.
We’re going We’re going to need everybody to score and rebound and defend every night. And that’s the best team to be on, when you don’t have to run to the corner every play and wait for a guy to make a play for you.”
Morris primarily role with the Lakers was to find a free corner spot and drill the three-point shot. With Lebron James as their primary ball-handler, Morris just need to wait for LeBron to create a play for him.
With his new team Miami Heat, Morris thinks that there will be a lot of ball movement and even said that he could play like his old self.
Morris averaged 6.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 20 minutes per game during the 2020-21 NBA season. His minutes dipped in the playoffs as he played behind former Lakers big men Montrezl Harrell, Andre Drummond and Marc Gasol.
